Battery for bilge pump and depth finder.?
Need to know what kind of battery setup to run in my boat for just one small bilge and fish finder. I dont want to spend the $$ on a deep cylce if I dont have to, but dont know if there is another option. I looked at a one of those booster pack that also supply 12 v current, but dont know if the battery in it is enough to run a bilge for a day of fishing. Any help appriciated.
A car battery is built to start an engine, so can deliver very high current for a few seconds - perhaps 5 - 20% of capacity, when the engine starts all electrical supply is produced by the alternator, and the battery is recharged to about 75% capacity within ten or fifteen minutes. Starting batteries are absolutely not suitable for any deep cycle or extended draw down.
You will find a good quality Gel type battery of around 25 - 50 A/hr and quality multistage charger to suit as the most cost effective and reliable way to run both for a full day - depending on the size of the bilge pump and sonar, (and if your bilge pump is on more than occasionally I'd be heading for the beach personally) you should aim to have twice the capacity in your battery than you would expect to use in a long day. If you charge fully immediately you get home after every trip, then the battery will last for years. Gel type batteries are designed to deliver a steady low current supply, but are quite happy to supply occasional heavy draw at the expense of outright capacity, if really abused lifespan will be reduced though, you would need industrial traction type batteries if you want 100% draw down and constant high current potential - these are very expensive. As an example I have just fitted a battery bank into a friends remote property for his remote area power supply, this bank is guaranteed to cycle 1000 times to 100% DOD no matter what. The guarantee is extended to 4000 cycles if never drawn below 50% - a dramatic improvement in life span for $8,000! (Expected life is 20 years) If you draw a starting battery down to really flat, say 80% or further you will find one of the cells will fail within a couple of dozen cycles, rendering the battery worthless - in severe cases a starting battery can completely fail within two or three 100% cycles - and few 'Deep Cycle' hybrids such as marine batteries are any more than a re-badged light truck battery by the way. Unless the manufacturer specifically states in writing that their product is designed to be drawn below 50% DOD - it isn't.
The cheap booster packs tend to have (very) cheap batteries in them, and are rarely long lived as a result - even with care. With batteries you will never get more than you pay for, and in any case unless you invest in quality charging systems you will never get close to the lifespan even very good batteries can provide.
