genetics question?
This is really confusing me. I am so sure that the answer should be (b)Large and Fast, because it follows the 9/16 ratio for both dominant alleles.. however, both parents were slow. So it can not fast can not be a dominant allele.
Does anybody know HOW to figure this out?
Thanks so much for any help, i know these hw questions are annoying...
In an attempt to create farm-raised Tilapia ideal for restaurant use, Horace Fishfinder crosses two wild tilapia that he has captured. The male is large and slow. The female is small and slow. The following numbers of offspring that resulted from this cross fall into the four categories as is shown:
Large and Slow = 28
Large and Fast = 93
Small and Slow = 7
Small and Fast = 32
19.Assuming that the traits involved are not sex-linked, which of the traits appear to be the dominant alleles?
a.Large and Slow
b.Large and Fast
c.Small and Slow
d.Small and Fast
e.Unable to predict
Count the total number of offsprings = 28 + 93 + 7 + 32 = 160
Count the total number of Large offsprings = 28 + 93 = 121
Count the total number of Small offsprings = 7 + 32 = 39
Note that Large + Small offsprings = 121 + 39 = 160
Count the total number of Fast offsprings = 93 + 32 = 125
Count the total number of Slow offsprings = 28 + 7 = 35
Note that Fast and Slow offsprings = 125 + 35 = 160
Given that Large/Small traits are independent from Fast/Slow traits, we can conclude that:
1. the Large trait is dominant over Small
2. the Fast trait is dominant over Slow
**Edit...i noticed that there is no Fast parent
in this case, either the problem has a misprint
or if not, maybe the Fast/Slow trait is not totally independent from the Large/Small trait.
