I have an Apelco fish finder. Can I splice the transducer cable? shoot through hull with transom transducer?
I purchased a used Apelco 265 Depth Sound Fish Finder. Time to get rid of the original strobe sounder!!!!
I ran the wires today and came up short by about 3 ft. Can I splice the transducer wires? I will soldier the splices.....
The Apelco came with a transom mounted transducer. The seller said he had it mounted in his bilge and it worked fine. The silicon sealer was still partial gooped around the transducer so the story was believable. Since the wiring was short I couldn't install it in the bottom of the bilge but did put it next to one of the stringer and push it down with my foot. Unfortunately I didn't get a depth reading.
Splice doable? Transducer shooting through the hull workable? I am not looking for fish finding capability just depth finding.

It is possible to shoot through the bottom depending on the boat. I tried to do this on a Sea Ray boat about 10 years ago and the fiberglass was too thick - couldn't get any readings. However, I had 2 other boats with the transducer shooting through the bottom of the hull prior to that and it worked well. Both were fiberglass and the transducer was secured with silicone. Make sure there are no air bubbles and don't try to shoot though a stringer, pick a space between stringers.
